Vikram Vedha 2022 Hit or Flop?

The highly anticipated 2022 Hindi remake of Vikram Vedha has unfortunately emerged as a box office flop despite having a massive budget and an impressive star cast.

Directed by Pushkar-Gayathri, this neo-noir action thriller film was produced jointly by YNOT Studios, Friday Filmworks, Reliance Entertainment, T-Series Films and Jio Studios on a reported budget of ₹170 crore.

With Bollywood superstars Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan playing the lead roles along with Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf and Yogita Bihani in supporting roles, Vikram Vedha had immense hype and high expectations surrounding its release.

However, the film has severely underperformed at the box office with a worldwide gross collection of just ₹135.03 crore as of November 9, 2022. Out of this, its domestic box office earnings stand at ₹79 crore, with lackluster overseas collection making up the rest.

Clearly, Vikram Vedha has not been able to recover its massive reported budget of ₹170 crore and is on course to become one of the biggest flops of 2022.

One factor contributing to its failure is the exorbitant budget. For a dark themed neo-noir remake, the extravagant ₹170 crore spending seems unjustified. In contrast, the original 2017 Tamil film was made on a modest budget of ₹11 crores but went on to earn ₹60 crores due to its close connect with the regional audience.

Film trade analysts attribute Vikram Vedha’s failure to weak word-of-mouth, lack of appeal for the genre, competition from other releases and average critic reviews. Hrithik and Saif’s performances came in for praise but the film was criticized for its lengthy runtime and slow pacing in parts.

The box office numbers indicate that Vikram Vedha failed to generate enough footfalls after its lackluster opening despite positive feedback from some viewers. The collections saw a steady decline in the following weeks.

It seems the magic of the original 2017 Tamil film could not be effectively replicated for Hindi audiences. Vikram Vedha ends up as one of Bollywood’s bigger flops for 2022 despite its promising trailer, popular lead actors and lavish production.
